Stuttgart/Frankfurt, Germany, February 17, 2010 – bio.logis is a biotech startup specialized in making genetic information available. Headed by a medic, the startup provides genetic diagnostic services for physicians and interested private individuals. IBM has partnered bio.logis from the outset in its business model’s conception and development. IBM also implemented the company’s website and drew up the overall concept for a smart and flexible IT landscape.
Since August 2009, bio.logis has provided doctors and their patients at the Frankfurt Innovation Center with human genetic diagnostic services and genetic advice. In addition to classic diagnosis the innovative startup aims to make the findings of genetic tests available to private individuals as a basis for personal health decisions.
Along with its comprehensive expertise in human genetics and diagnostics, bio.logis relies on advice, services and solutions from IBM. As a partner from the outset, IBM Global Business Services has supported the startup with both the conception and the implementation of its business model. As a first step, bio.logis successfully built up its classic genetic diagnostic business for medical professionals. In the next step, personalized genetic information is to be made available to private customers via the company’s Web portal. Customers can then export quality findings for use by the doctors who are treating them. The basis for the provision of this service is smart, highly secure IT that supports the storage, analysis and processing of genetic data.
"Bio.logis is an outstanding example of how IT can become a success factor for companies," says Martina Koederitz, IBM Germany’s business manager in charge of SMB business. "As an innovative biotech startup, bio.logis relies on smart IT to offer its customers new diagnostic opportunities. That is what we at IBM mean by a smart solution for a smarter planet."
In addition to consulting and joint development of the business model, IBM has devised a comprehensive IT landscape for the biotech company that is being implemented in a matter of months. The solution is claimed to be able to adjust flexibly to how bio.logis and the market develop.
It includes the customer and science portal, an internal process portal, the CRM system and the entire website. These are systems supported by various software products from IBM and other manufacturers, and data security is a key issue in the development of all components.
"Maximum security in handling our customers’ sensitive data is a top priority for us," says Professor Daniela Steinberger, founder and medical director of bio.logis. "IBM’s
expertise and reputation in this area convinced us that we have just the right partner on board." The solution is based on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) that can be adjusted flexibly to the planned further development of the business model and the company’s growth.
