The company GFE Blut mbH researches, develops and distributes diagnostic procedures and automation solutions for the blood donor services. Investors are the Blood Donor Service West and NSTOB of the German Red Cross as well as the Blood Donor Service of the Bavarian Red Cross.

The detection methods are based on the real-time PCR method for pools of 2 to 96 donor samples. These methods can be used manually as well as semi-automated and fully automated on platforms with self-developed control software. In 2009, the first two systems for the detection of HAV and parvovirus B19 were put into routine operation. From the beginning of 2010, they will be used by all shareholders for detecting viruses relevant for transfusion (HCV, HIV -1/-2, HBV, HAV, parvovirus B19). With a routine testing volume of 2.5 million blood donation samples per year, more than half of the blood supply in Germany will be tested with the GFE Blut detection method.
